These brief notes are intended to help you get the most out of this ADC2 set. NOTE: You must have ADC2 version 2.09(b) or later in order to use this set. Patch downloads are available from HPS.

1. The Map

The map has been made to look as much like the original as possible, with one exception: I've made the area around the front lines a darker shade, and pitted them with shellholes. This has no effect on play, but I thought it would give the British player a better feel for breaking through 'to the green fields beyond'. Owners of the original game will have no difficulty in recognizing the various terrain features. In any event, these features are listed in the Terrain Info box at the lower-right corner of the screen.

Villages are named, but the names only appear on the map at zoom 3, to cut down on map clutter at zooms 2 and 3. The names of the various trench systems appear in the terrain info box when you position the cursor over a trench hex.

2. The Counters

I have made several changes to the counters, in a modest attempt to bring the game closer to current graphics standards (the original game was published in 1978, and the counters are a bit bland). The major changes are:

* British tank units, and air units of both sides, are iconic. The tank units contain a scanned depiction of a British Mark IV tank, while the air units depict a top view of various (more or less generic) aircraft.
* French units are horizon blue, opposed to the original yucky green.
* There are separate Cadre units for each nationality, in the respective national colours.
* Tank Breakdown counters are also iconic, and have been flip-defined directly into the tank classes (see Flip Definitions, below).

Class values are as follows: for non-artillery units, Attack-Defence-Movement. For Artillery, the values are Defence-Movement-Barrage-SOS-Range. For Air units, the values are Air-to-Air, Air-to-Ground.

There is only one Piece Value: Game Turn of Entry, for reinforcement units.

NOTE: For purposes of Rule 12.2 (Capturing Tanks), you can edit the tank unit captured by double clicking on it in the Piece Action box, and then adding the word 'CAPTURED' after the unit's designtion.

Units are flip defined as follows: for non-tank units, Full Strength - Disrupted - Full Strength. For tanks, Full Strength - Disrupted - Broken Down - Full Strength.

3. The .OPS Files

There are five .OPS files included in this gameset:

- Green Fields Beyond is the master .OPS file. All units are in their various pools, with none deployed on the map.
- Campaign Game has the at-start units deployed in their correct hexes, with other units in pools according to their turn of entry.
- Battle for Bourlon and German Counterattack are set up for Scenarios 25.2 and 25.3.
- Counter Manifest is simply the counters laid out on the map as they are on the original countersheet. I created this file to double-check unit values and to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything. I decided to include it in the set as an aid to anyone who wants to check their copy of the game for missing pieces.

I think that's it. I hope you enjoy this game - I've always considered it one of the finest games ever produced by SPI.
